KATHMANDU — Grande International Hospital (GIH) has been designated an Advanced Stroke Centre by the World Stroke Organization (WSO), a historic first for Nepal’s healthcare system. This prestigious three-year accreditation, effective from October 17, 2025, to October 16, 2028, recognizes GIH’s adherence to global, evidence-based standards for superior stroke care.
The accreditation places Grande International Hospital in an elite international group of healthcare institutions that have met the WSO’s rigorous criteria for clinical practice and patient outcomes.
“This accreditation represents our unwavering commitment to providing world-class stroke care to the people of Nepal,” said Dr. Raju Paudel, Consultant Neurologist and Director of the Stroke Programme at Grande International Hospital. “Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability globally, and in Nepal, one person suffers a stroke every 10 minutes. This recognition validates our team’s dedication to delivering rapid, comprehensive, and evidence-based treatment that can save lives and improve patient outcomes.”
Meeting International Standards
The Advanced Stroke Centre designation confirms that GIH maintains comprehensive, high-level stroke care capabilities, including:
“Every minute counts when treating stroke patients,” emphasized Dr. Subash Phuyal, Neurointervention Radiologist at Grande International Hospital. “This accreditation ensures that patients across Nepal have access to internationally recognized stroke care standards right here at home, reducing the need to seek treatment abroad and ensuring timely intervention.”
Dr. Phuyal also noted the hospital’s capability to perform complex neurointerventions, including coiling for aneurysms, stenting, and treatment for Arteriovenous Malformations (AVM).
Rigorous Evaluation Process
The accreditation process involved a thorough evaluation of the hospital’s infrastructure, clinical protocols, and patient outcomes by a team of WSO experts. The assessment team included Associate Prof. Dr. Dierdre De Silva, Secretary of the WSO and Consultant Neurologist from the National Neuroscience Institute Singapore, and Ms. Rupal Sedani, Global Certification Lead of the WSO.
The certification was formally awarded by WSO President Dr. Jeyaraj D. Pandian, Immediate Past President Dr. Sheila Martins, and Treasurer Dr. Valeria Caso.
Hospital Director Dr. Binod Bijukchhe congratulated the stroke team, stating, “Grande International Hospital remains committed to advancing neurological care in Nepal and continuing to meet the highest international standards for stroke treatment and patient care.”
Grande International Hospital is now the first and only hospital in Nepal to hold the World Stroke Organization’s Advanced Stroke Centre Accreditation, solidifying its position as a leader in specialized neurological and critical care in the region.
